The Artist: Hopper
Undoubtedly one of the greatest artists associated with American Scene painting, Edward Hopper depicts a landscape and mood as lonely as that of De Chirico’s Italian piazza transformed into the American provincial landscape. Describing the United States as "a chaos of ugliness," Hopper nevertheless manages to convey a strange beauty in his landscapes, be it the urban landscape with its oddly shaped buildings, or the seascape. Having a particular interest in seascapes and ships, Hopper often painted in New England, where he built a summer home on Cape Cod while maintaining a home and studio in New York. Edward Hopper’s work is included in museum, private and corporate collections throughout the world. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Art in Boston and many others worldwide
